VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS

  • You must be 16 years of age or older. (Volunteers under 18 require parent permission and are taken on a limited basis, based on need).
  • You must complete a volunteer application.
  • You must sign a Volunteer Agreement and a Release and Hold Harmless Agreement.
  • Volunteers must attend required trainings and meetings periodically.
  • Volunteers must commit to at least two shifts per month.
  • Volunteers must show up for your scheduled shifts on time.  If you cannot make a scheduled shift, you must notify a manager in a timely fashion.

Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer for HEART Animal Rescue and Adoption Team. HEART relies solely on the time, energy, and dedication of our volunteers.

  • Sew or stuff catnip sticks or catnip pillows.
  • Do you have a flair for decorating cookies? Frost or decorate dog biscuits.
  • Initiate and organize fundraising projects.
  • Assist chairperson for a major fundraiser.
  • Assist with an event by helping with set-up/clean-up, serving raffles and more.
  • Acquire donations for upcoming events.
  • Do you have creative grant-writing expertise to help us identify foundation and corporate grants and to prepare formal grant applications?
  • Visit schools to teach children lessons on the care of animals and the responsibilities of pet ownership and the important work of HEART.
  • Broaden awareness of HEART in the community.
  • Look for opportunities to participate in community events to promote organization.
  • Manage publicity and public relations to provide a "recognized" image.
  • Serve as liaison to local media (TV, radio, newspapers)
  • Look for media opportunities to promote HEART.
  • Find new ways to recruit volunteers.
  • Find ways to retain existing volunteers and reward their hard work.
  • HAC morning cleaning staff to provide important behind the scenes help caring for the cats, cleaning and preparing the adoption center to be open to the public.
  • Work when the adoption center is open to the public evenings & Saturday to greet visitors, answer questions about basic cat behavior and care and adoptions.
  • Speak to community groups and civic organizations to promote an understanding of pet overpopulation, the plight of homeless animals in Western New York and the important work HEART does.
  • Serve as a liaison for organizations that wish to raise money or collect supplies for HEART.

Volunteer Agreement

1. My services to HEART are provided strictly in a voluntary capacity as a Volunteer, and without any express or implied promise of salary, compensation, or other payment of any kind whatsoever.

2. I will familiarize myself and comply with HEART's policies and procedures applicable to Volunteers. I will adhere to all HEART policies and procedures and understand that failure to do so may result in my termination as a Volunteer.

3. I fully understand that HEART expects high standards of moral and ethical treatment of the animals under its care. I also understand that HEART expects respectful treatment of HEART clients, partners, and other Volunteers. I agree to abide by these standards in my capacity as a Volunteer.

4. I will not represent HEART outside my immediate Volunteer capacity. I understand that HEART has designated staff to represent HEART to any media organizations.

5. I acknowledge and confirm that as a Volunteer I may acquire information on the organization, its volunteers, and about certain matters and things which are of a confidential nature and that such information is the exclusive property of the organization and will remain in the strictest confidence.

6. I understanding that public relations is an important part of a Volunteer's activities on behalf of HEART and hereby authorize HEART to use any photographs of me in its possession for public relations purposes.

7. I agree to attend and assist with a minimum of 2 of HEART's main fundraising events.
