The companionship and devotion of a pet is something that brings joy to life. HEART’s COMPANION CATS FOR SENIORS PROGRAM can help you get that feeling again.
This program is designed to give our older cats (5+ years) the opportunity to be placed in a loving home by matching them with qualified senior citizens who are 65 years of age or older.
An older cat would be a great choice for an older person that needs a buddy. Older cats don't ask for much -– just a warm place to sleep, good meals, and plenty of love! To an older animal, a senior citizen that dotes on them and spends a significant amount of time allowing them to sit on their lap or lay at their feet is an inviting and ideal home.
IS THERE A COST?
There is no adoption fee with this program. HEART pays for the annual vet visits, vaccines, and other medical needs. Vet visits must be pre-approved by HEART and you must use the HEART veterinarian. We ask the senior to provide a good quality food, fresh water, and clean litter.
A CAT MAY LIVE 15-20 YEARS. THAT’S A VERY LONG TIME!! WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO YOUR PET IF YOU ARE NO LONGER ABLE TO CARE FOR IT?
Since all cats placed through this program remain the property of HEART you can have peace of mind knowing that should you become unable to care for your pet it is returned to HEART so we can find it another loving home.
HOW DOES THE COMPANION CATS FOR SENIORS PROGRAM WORK?
Once approved for the program, HEART will select a companion that is a good match for you from the cats available through this program. (Note: it doesn’t happen often, but sometimes we have no cats available in this program.)
Before you take your new pet home you sign a Companion Cats for Seniors Foster Agreement agreeing to be a responsible pet parent by providing humane care, good quality food, fresh water, clean litter, and companionship. A co-signer is required.
We will periodically contact you just to see how the cat is doing and if you have any concerns. This will be YOUR pet for as long as you are able to care for it (you are considered its permanent foster home). We do not place the cat up for adoption to another home. If you decide you no longer wish to care for the cat it is returned to HEART.
The cat remains the property of HEART so you cannot give the cat away, take it to a shelter, abandon it, or otherwise dispose of it. HEART reserves the right to evaluate the living conditions of the cat at any time.
